OVERVIEW

This document provides an evaluation of three of the leading cloud-based agile project

management tools: JIRA, VersionOne, and Rally. The purpose of this document is to provide project managers, product managers, and project administrators with a comparison of common tools used for an Agile framework based project management. Using a standard Agile framework use case scenario, the three tools were evaluated on a set of essential criteria for successfully executing a project through all stages of a project lifecycle.

INTRODUCTION

The waterfall project management methodology has been, for a long time, a proven method for developing products based on customer requirements and releasing it in time to meet market needs. Given the need for companies to adapt to the constant changes in the marketplace with as little cost/risk as possible with minimal review/rebuild through the development cycle, project management using the Agile framework is gaining traction.

With the Agile framework gaining popularity, the number of agile management tools on the market has grown. Selecting a tool to best carry a given project to completion on time, and within budget is not easy. A team of Project Management World MeetUp

members took on the project to evaluate agile project management tools after a survey of group members indicated a high demand for information about popular cloud-based project management tools.

After extensive research on agile management tools, the team selected JIRA,VersionOne, and Rally as the tools of choice for this project because of their large user base and their features largely meet the needs of agile management workflows. After some research on MS Project for Agile, the team concluded that it is not as well-suited for Agile framework based projects in comparison with the other tools discussed here.
