On December 10 there will be a discussion by a panel of experts on the timely topic “Nurturing the Project Team”.

Background information for this topic
In these days of remote and hybrid work, project managers must deal with feelings of isolation and confusion. Nurturing team members is first and foremost a human obligation. In addition, it ensures productivity and loyalty, not only to the current project but also for future projects.

Understanding priorities
High performing teams know the overall goals of their company, the goals of their team, and what work should be prioritized. They understand the hierarchy of tasks to be completed, know the deadlines they’re working with, and choose the highest-impact work to make top priority.

Building Trust
Collaboration, innovation, and creative breakthroughs come when high-performing teams feel that they are working in a safe environment. Sharing ideas, taking risks, and leaning into full creative potential comes when teams trust and respect each other. This is critical for any team in order to reach the highest levels of project management.

Engaging the Team
Keep in mind: Everyone demonstrates their engagement differently. They may not chat with other team members a lot, but are open when asked questions or jump in when someone needs help. In those cases, isolation is a choice and is probably not hampering the overall team or your productivity.

Make sure people don’t feel left out. Check in with everyone on a regular basis and encourage open feedback. Be consistent in creating a group attitude of everyone working toward common goals.

If someone is feeling isolated:

  • Ask them what they would like to see in the situation.
  • Be considerate of their feelings.
  • Look for ways to address their concerns.
  • Always encourage a “team” feeling among members of the group.
