Project Integration Management is about putting together the various processes and Project Management knowledge areas. In other words, it is “ managing” the Project Management. As such, it includes Project Management methodologies and life cycles; defining project complexity; characterizing project environment, and organizational assets and processes.
Project Integration Management also contains characteristics of crucial integrative actions such as successfully managing stakeholder expectations, making choices and trade-offs among competing objectives and alternatives, and managing the interdependencies among Project ManagementActivities.
The need for Project Integration Management is evident in situations where individual processes interact (Figure 4.1).In the Guide to PMBoK, there is some similarity between Chapter 3 (overview of processes) and Chapter 4 (Project Integration Management). This is because Project Integration Management is an overarching knowledge area that encompasses all process groups.
In addition to the project charter, the integration management processes also produce the project plan. In producing the project plan, the project manager first defines what subsidiary plans to prepare and how detailed each plan will be. After the subsidiary plans are prepared, then compile and consolidate the subsidiary plans, resolving any conflicts and making trade-off between competing resource requirements.
The Planning process group has more processes than any other process group. As a result, a lot of time and effort goes into the planning process of any project. In fact, this process results in a project management plan that is progressively elaborated by updates that are controlled and approved through the Integrated Change Control process throughout the life cycle of the project.
